Negril: Excursions, Cool and Fun Activities Plus 7 Miles Of Beach

Negril is a seaside resort on the Western edge of Jamaica. It is probably most well-known for its Seven Mile (11 km) Beach. Negril’s village center and the Southern part of the Seven Mile Beach are in the Westmoreland parish while the most Northern part lies in the Hanover parish.

The name Negril derived from “Negrillo”. That name was given by the Spaniards to the black cliffs south of the village in 1994. Negril’s development to a seaside resort started late 1950’s. Near the end of the 1960 ‘s the first small scaled tourist accommodations appeared in Negril. When the road from Green Island was asphalted the village started to florish. Back in the sixties it was mainly very popular amongst hippies. Whereas a lot of mass tourist accommodations were built on Jamaica’s north coast during the seventies and eighties Negril preserved its charme of small-scale and sociability.
