When visiting Jamaica it is going to be almost impossible not to come across Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee, but what makes it this special? In this article we will try to give a short introduction to this world-renowned coffee from Jamaica.
Jamaican Blue Mountain is an exclusive coffee that grows in the Blue Mountain region. The Blue Mountain range is located north of the Jamaican capital Kingston. The coffee is world-famous for its mild taste and moderate acidity. It is one of the most expensive kinds of coffee in the world. Eighty percent of the production is exported to Japan. Blue Mountain coffee is an ingredient for Tia Maria liquor.
Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee has a rich history that goes back to 1728, when Nicholas Lawes, then the governor, imported the first coffee plants from Martinique. After that there was a tremendous upsurge in cultivating coffee. In 1944 the Jamaican government demanded that all exported coffee would only be traded through one central trade office. The task for this office was to watch the quality of the coffee.”Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee” is an internationally protected coffee nowadays. The name is exclusively reserved for coffee that is certified by the Coffee Industry Board of Jamaica.
Their trademark only allows Arabica coffee beans which are grown in a geographical area that is limited to the Saint Andrew, Saint Thomas, Portland and Saint Mary parishes. Besides that it’s demanded that the coffee can only be grown on an altitude that has to be between 3.000 and 5.500 feet (910 and 1700 meters). This requirement makes sure that the coffee grows in a cool and moist climate with a lot of rain. Together with the fertile and well dehydrated soil this provides perfect circumstances for the growing of Arabica coffee plants. It is forbidden to perform agriculture above an altitude of 5.500 feet.
There are five coffee classifications for Blue Mountain coffee: Blue Mountain No.1, Blue Mountain No.2, Blue Mountain No.3, Blue Mountain Peaberry en Blue Mountain Triage. Blue Mountain No.1 is the highest quality coffee.
